Work begins in early May on the Golden Mile

April 2025. Visualisation of the new Cambridge & Kent Terrace crossing

“…from early May, construction will begin on the Golden Mile Courtenay Place revitalisation project.

The first phase will run from May to November at the intersection of Courtenay Place, Cambridge and Kent Terrace. Much of this construction will take place at night which will allow us to keep the intersection flowing during the day.

Towards the end of the year, once these works are completed, construction will begin on Courtenay Place itself.

Location of construction

Work will get underway to develop a new centre island at the intersection outside The Embassy Theatre. The construction timeline is outlined on our website, along with more details about all the improvements planned for the intersection. We’ve also attached a letter we recently sent to residents in the area, which contains a stage-by-stage timeline of construction.

What this means for you

Pedestrians: The existing pedestrian crossing will remain in use until the new one is complete. At times we may need to direct people to the nearest alternative crossing, and this will be well signposted.

Cyclists: The image above shows the safer, improved cycleway planned for the intersection. During its construction, we will temporarily realign the current cycleway to divert cyclists onto the footpath around upcoming construction. This will be clearly marked.

Drivers: From late May to late September (approximately), the right-hand turn from Cambridge Terrace to Marjoribanks Street will be closed from 9am – 4pm to allow for construction. Traffic management signs will be in place.

Businesses: We have been working closely with nearby businesses to ensure they know what to expect during construction. We understand that construction can impact business, and we encourage you to keep supporting local wherever you can.

Residents: People who live close to the works can expect some night works at the start of construction. Where possible, the construction company will do what’s possible to minimise noise.
